P4 production materials & techniques for an original print media product
Meaning: The meaning of this section means what equipment is used in the project, how are they used to achieve the best result, and how safety is controlled.
Purpose: The purpose of this section is to show the audiences how I planned the project step by step and the idea, also show I will prevent the risks from occurring in my project.
SETTING UP EQUIPMENT
I used Canon 7D DSLR for both my filming and shooting. This camera is very productive for this project, because it has a wide range of shots, it allows me to shoot close up, medium shots or even long shots. It is a professional camera, with good color tone and capture very clear images. This camera also allow me to set up the Aperture, ISO, and the brightness of the picture, which is useful for students who study media and photography. It is not very big in size comparing to other cameras, which is easy to handle and bring.
In order to capture the right size of photo, I either have to walk closer or further to the model or simply rotate the lens to zoom in or zoom out of the picture.
This picture is captured by Canon 7D DSLR, we can see that the picture is very clear, the lighting of the picture is nice, and allows me to capture a medium shot perfectly.
From this picture we could also see the model is holding a bath bomb, and looking at the camera. This could directly advertise for the brand LUSH, and how she looks at the camera is like having eye contact with the audiences, which attracts them to purchase the product. The bath bomb has a very sharp colour contrasting with the costume of the model and the background, therefore it is very recognisable for the audiences to find this product and know it by the colour. The model has a very simple white top an blue jeans, this gives the audiences a very simple, fresh and young feeling, which attracts young adults or teenagers.
I also used the camera tripod in my project. The tripod allows me to take picture steadily, it also has a stick to control the angle of the camera, which is very useful for me to take shots horizontally or vertically. It has has so locks on the leg of the tripod, it is for setting the height of the tripod, so it is very easy to secure the camera in different height, which allows me to take nice images from different height. Also, I can pictures in a steeper gradient because I can also set the tripod with one leg higher and 2 legs lower, therefore the camera may face up or down, which is a very useful tool for filming videos and photo shooting.
The picture at the right is taken with the tripod, it allows me to take the picture vertically and steadily. We can see that the picture is very clear, not blurry or vague. This picture is also very wide, I am able to take not only the whole body of the model, which makes the picture look more confortable as it has more spacing, with more spacing around the model, I am more able to do more things with the background, for example animation background, or adding big logo of LUSH.
Also, we could see from this original print that the background is very simple, therefore contrast the model's body and costume, giving the audience a very fresh, simple and young feeling. Also, the colour of the bath bomb is very obvious due to her simple costume and plain background, which could make this product more out-standing from the picture, emphasising the product and attract the audiences to purchase the product and promoting the brand.
This is the lighting. It is very useful as it changes the tone and the lighting of the picture and the videos. With different lighting, it creates a different feeling to the audiences. It might have different color of lighting, as the picture above shows, the green lighting or yellow lighting, which makes different feeling and sensation to the photo.
The lighting of a photo affects how audience feel about it. For example the first picture on the top, it has a paler lighting, which makes it look simple and normal, and also allow us to see the model clearly. However, the photo on the bottom, has a relatively yellow lighting, which makes the audiences feel it is warmer and brighter, it is more hopeful than the photo above. Here shows how lighting is important in a photo shooting or filming.
These 2 photos are medium shots, because it shows the head to the chest of the model, it also have some spaces at the side of the model, allowing me to edit more things to it during photoshopping them. Here, the model is holding again a very eye-catching colour bath bomb, and she is holding her hair, smiling at the camera, making the picture happy and joyful, also giving the audiences a feeling of fresh, young and simple, due to her simple costume. The plain background at the back allows me to edit or change the colour of the background, which could make the picture more interesting and easier to edit. The action of holding the hair with her arms up makes her whole body more open up to the camera, making the audiences feel comfortable and natural.
This is a reflecting umbrella, it helps controlling the lighting of my videos and pictures, there is a big difference on moving the umbrella forward and backwards. If I place the reflecting umbrella forward, the object will be lighter, if I place the reflecting umbrella further, the object will be darker. Therefore, the reflecting umbrella is very important and is useful to maintain the lighting of the shooting.
Although the lighting is very important, but it also requires the reflecting umbrella to enhance its effect. If we compare the 2 photos from above, we can see that the first photo is dimmer and dark than the lower one. It is due to the distance between the reflecting umbrella and the lighting on the model, the first one is further and the second one is nearer, which gives audiences different feelings.
From these 2 photos, we could see the model holding the bath bomb and smells it. From this action, we could see that she really enjoys the scent which the bath bomb gives and she is smiling, making the audiences wanting to purchase the product due to her action. The colour of the bath bomb is blue, yellow and pink, therefore it has a very sharp contrast to the model and the background, as she is wearing a very simple white top.
I have taken these photos in a medium shot, because these 2 photos only show the head to the waist of the model, I deliberately did this because I would like the audiences to focus on her action of the upper part, but not her lower parts too. Also, taking the photo horizontally has more space at the 2 sides of the model, therefore I could edit the photo easily by removing the background adding logos or pictures next to the model.
Although the camera is the main equipment of the project, the lens are very important also. Different lens give different effects to the photo, for example I have used 2 kinds of lens for my project. One of them allows me capture or film in a general angle, while the other one allows me to capture or film long shots.
This photo is captured with the general lens, which is usually for medium shots as only the upper part of the model is captured.
In this picture, the model is holding the bath bomb with both hands, closing her eyes and smiling as if she is enjoying the scent of the bath bomb. I have asked her to pose like this because this shows as if the model really like the scent of the bath bomb, physically attracting the audiences to purchase the product, also the bath bomb is facing the camera, therefore it is easier for the audiences to observe and see the bath bomb, the colour of the bath bomb is very sharp comparing to the colour of the background and the costume of the model, therefore making the product more recognising for the public.
I have shot this photo with a medium shot, showing the head to the waist of the model, this is because I only want the audiences to focus on the model's face expression and her acts, I do not want to distract the audiences's attention by shooting the lower part of the model, which makes it out of focus. I took this photo horizontally so that I have more space to edit and to change the background colour, making the picture looks more interesting.
This lens is different, it is for capturing long shots, we can see the difference from the photo above, this photo is wider and the whole body of the model is captured, and provides more space for the photo, so I could edit the background and also adding the logo and close up of the product to the picture.
In this picture, the model is holding the bath bomb, and looking away from the camera, as if she is thinking about something. This could make the audiences feel like she is having a deep thought about the bath bomb, and as if the bath bomb is part of her, attracting the audiences to purchase the product. The colour of the bath bomb is contrasting with the background colour and her costume, which makes it more out-standing from the picture and emphasising the advertising product.
This time I chose to use full shot to capture the whole body of the model, this is because I would like to do a straight poster to be the cover of the magazine, the 2 sides of the model have a lot of space for editing or adding text to it, making the photo more interesting and eye-catching.
PHOTO SHOOTING
For my photo shooting, I have chosen the school studio to do it.
These are the photos taken on the shooting day, apart from it has all the equipments that I need, also it has quite a lot of space of the model to move around and do her acts. Also, I do not have to be aware of the weather if it is good or not, I could film my video and take my photos anytime I want. The lighting could be controlled easily as I just have to move the equipment further or closer to the model, also the lighting is stable because unlike shooting outside the studio, there is only a small period of time that the sun shines, and it will go away very quickly in the evening, therefore, I prefer to do my shooting and filming in the studio.
In my video, I also need the Green screen, because I would like to change the background,to something else, for example changing the colours or adding extra effects. And I could only use this in a studio, therefore studio is definitely my perfect location for shooting and filming.
RISK AND PRECAUTIONS
I am going to do my photo shooting in the studio. However, the studio might occurs many different hazards. I am going to list out all the hazards and the solutions.
Damaged camera: The camera is the main equipment in a photo shooting, if we don't pay attention to it, it will be damaged and dropped on the floor. The crushed lens might hurt the camera woman or the models as the glass is very sharp.
Solution: To be able to have a safe shooting, I will secure the camera to the camera tripod, to make sure it does not drop on the floor. Also I will handle the camera in care, try not to drop it or damage it.
Water splashed out: My project includes a fish tank and water. And it might occur danger because water is very slippery and if it can contact with wires, it will conduct to electricity and might hurt crews.
Solution: I will prepare some towels in case the water is splashed out, to keep the shooting environment dry and clean. Also, I will keep wires away from the water and the fish tank, so it does not contact with any electricity devices or electricity.
Bath bombs crushed before being used: The bath bombs are one of the main props in my project. They will be appearing in a lot of scenes and also is the symbolism of my advert.
Solution: To prevent any accidents, I will protect the bath bombs properly. For example, handle them in care, or place them on the table when they don't need to be used.
Tripping over wires: Wires are very common in a photo shooting, they are used to connect electricity and an electricity device. But if they are not organised properly, they will be very messy and might also trip people over.
Solution: To prevent people being tripped over the wires, first I will keep the wires away from the model and the crews, so they won't be tripped over the wires, also I am not using a lot of wires and devices, therefore they won't be really messy, and I will keep them in front of me so that I can see them and they will not trip me over too.
Pumping into chairs and tables: The table and chairs are one of the prop in my project. They don't appear in a lot of the scenes, how ever they might occur hazards too because they are huge and hard.
Solution: I will move them away once they are not needed, and will ask the model to be careful with the chairs and tables to make sure she does not bump into any of them.
RISK ASSESSMENT FORM
ORIGINAL IDEAS VS REALITY WORK
These are my original ideas of how the photos or posters will be, my theme of the adverts are dreamy, young and fresh. However, sometimes the reality work could be different to what I have expected. I am going to explain why they are different and how I changed my ideas at last.
These are my first ideas, what I wanted to produce at the beginning, without considering the difficulties an risk, just simply ideas.
These are my further ideas, which I have considered the difficulties, including the angle of the camera, the lighting and risk. I also consider on whether it is easy to edit and photoshop, these photos has more details than my first idea, listing out the colour of the background, name of the object, action of the model, preposition of the logo and the props.
This was the original idea of my poster. I have captured a photo of the model holding the bath bomb jumping into the air. However, it is too hard to follow the original idea, because the studio is too small to capture this full shot of the model, but I am going to follow the original idea as much as possible.
This is the original image, we can see it has some differences between my imaginary idea and the reality photo. I am going to combine the 2 photos above together to create my poster.
Here is some information about the raw material, I have used Canon 7D to do my photo-shooting, in this screenshot we are able to see the aperture is f/3.5 and a ISO 4000, it is because I would like to take a picture of the model jumping into the air, and this requires high ISO because it could capture the model's action quicker, also with this aperture, I am able to capture her actions clearly without having blurry images.
This is the final product after the editing. It is a bit different from my original idea. Firstly is because of the different angle, it is a bit too close, and also I couldn't capture her hands with the bath bombs, therefore I have to change it. I duplicate the paint to make the poster looks more colourful and energetic. I used a white background, because it contrasts with the paint, because they are too colourful I do not think using a coloured background would be nice.
I also put paints over her or behind her, to create some gradient. Then I put some lines and text on the paints, or some blank spaces, so it does not look that empty, and also giving an idea of the message to the audiences, "Let the colour spread all over you." This is said because the LUSH's bath bomb creates a lot of color in the water and when the person dip into the water, it feels like all the colours are spread all over you.
At last, I put a LUSH logo at the lower left handed corner, because it is an icon of the brand that I am advertising for, and it shows the audiences directly the look of the brand, so they could recognise it when they walk pass a LUSH shop in the street next time.
The is my original planning of how the photo would be, I would like to show 3 different pose of the same model in a photo, holding a bath bomb with medium shot, so only their head to the waist is shown in the picture. This is because I would like the audiences to focus on the action that they were doing, I also want to add some colour paints at the back to add more colours to the posters, so it emphasises the youthfulness of the brand, it also emphasises that LUSH's bath bombs create amazing art on the surface of the water. I wanted to show 3 different poses of the same model with the bath bomb is because I want to show how energetic the model is and how much poses she could do with the bath bomb, making the picture more interesting. Finally, I will add the LUSH logo to the corner of the poster.
Here is an information of the picture, we can see that the Aperture is f/6.3 and ISO speed 1250, these are normal settings, I have done this because this picture does not require jumping actions or what, therefore it is very easy to capture, the only thing I would like to have is a brighter picture, therefore I chose a high ISO speed, so that it can absorbs more light and make the picture looks clear.

However when I was editing, I realised that it appears better to use the full shots of the model, because it shows more of the body of the model, for example the pose at the left, she raises her leg up, which will make the audience feel younger. I used pink as the background, because it contradicts with the colour of the bath bomb that the model is holding, which could attract the audiences better to look the the advertising product. I have also changed the idea of using splatted paints as the background, and instead I changed it to a plain pink background, it is because pink is a very girly colour that matches the model and the theme of my project, it also represents youth and fresh.
I still used the idea of combining 3 poses of the model in a picture, however I added some more things from the original plan. I realised I could emphasis the brand with the logo of the brand. So, I edited the logo of the brand, and transform it to a bigger size, so that it becomes a background too, and it acts as a prop of the model, which she could go in front of the logo or behind, making it more iconic and interesting for the audiences to observe.
At the end, I also added the text and the LUSH logo to emphasise the advertising brand, so audiences know directly what's this advertisement is advertising for. I went to the official website of LUSH, and I checked the aims about fighting against animal testing and vegan products, which I think this 2 points will attract more people because some people are vegan and they love animals and would like to protect animals, therefore I put these 2 points on some empty spaces of the poster, using LUSH's official font to make it more iconic and using the colour of white so it contradicts with the background colour, that allows audiences to read the words quickly and clearly, I did not include big chunk of description as this is just a poster and I would like the audiences to get the idea of the poster or advertisement quickly, so they do not have to spend a lot of the to understand it and do not get bored of it.
The first picture was my original idea, which I would like to show the model holding the bath bomb with a pink background surrounded by feathers and bubbles. I wanted to put the logo at the upper right-hand corner.
Here is some information of the raw material, from the screenshot, we can see the aperture value is f/5.6, and the ISO speed is 1250, the reason why I used this setting is because I want the picture to be brighter, which is easier for me to edit, matches the theme of my topic, and also it is easier for the audiences to observe, the higher the ISO speed would allow the camera to absorb more light, and therefore brighter the picture will be.
But when I was editing I found out that I could make some changes to make the advert more effective and pretty. The pose of the model is totally the same as my original idea, because I would like the model to show how she is into LUSH, and showing her passion towards the products. Holding the bath bomb also helps to advertise the product of LUSH. However, I changed the background from pink to a colorful dissolved bath bomb water. I have done this because I wanted to stand out the product even more, as this background is the dissolvent of the bath bomb that the model was holding, I think this makes the poster looks even dreamy and effective. I also added a text on the top of the poster, as it could shortly express the idea of the poster and catches the audience's attention. I used white color for the text so it can contrast with the background so it is easier to see. I put the logo on the lower right-hand corner instead of the upper right-hand corner, because I think it looks better with this position and it makes the photo look even more like an advert.
The picture above was my original idea. I wanted to do a poster with a picture of the bath bomb dissolving into the water, with the model's hand holding it underneath the water. However, due to the lighting in the studio, I could not take a proper picture of the bath bomb dissolving into the water in an appropriate angle. Therefore I decided to change this idea.
These are the raw materials for my next poster. I decided to combine 3 photos into one poster.
This is my final poster, I have used 3 pictures of the model in different colours, to represent LUSH is a brand that creates beautiful art in the bath tub, I also used a photo of the dissolved bath bomb water as the background. So that it does not go too far from my original idea, and also using it as a background could increase its symbolism.
Also, I put a line "Submerge into the pool of LUSH art.", to make it more iconic and obvious to the audiences that this is an advertisement of LUSH. Also, interacting with the colourful poster on the model, this is so artistic that it relates to art of the text.
Here is a screenshot of information of the picture, I have set the camera with the setting of an aperture of f/5.6 and ISO speed rating 400, it is because I would like my picture to be brighter, and I would a clearer picture. These settings will allow me to achieve my aims.
The first picture was my original idea, however it is completely different from the reality work. This is due to the difficulty of capturing the bath bomb dissolving in this way. My water tank is cylinder in shape so it is very hard to capture it in a flat surface. The lighting is hard to handle and the water becomes very saturated when the bath bomb dissolves into the water, so it does not show half of the bath bomb dissolving into the water, which is not something I want, so I changed the idea completely.
I used a picture of the model feeling the bath bomb, this time the product is LUSH's sex bomb, I used this picture because she looks if she is enjoying the scent of the bath bomb. I used a background full of flower petals, this is due to the rose bud on the Sex bomb, I think they cooperates well and showing the audiences that the Bath bomb smells like flower. The overall color of the poster is pink, because the color of the bath bomb is also pink and some purple. I also put a huge text above the bath bomb, so it shows the idea of the poster and also catches the audiences's attention. I used a darker color on the text so it contrasts with the background and makes it looks sharp and easier to observe.
For my editing this time, I will use Adobe Photoshop CS5, it is a very good app for editing photos, as it has a big range of effect to work on, and it is easy to control and use. I can also edit 2 photos at the same time with this app, which meets my requirement.
I have chosen these 2 photos for my first editing. First I would open both photos in Adobe Photoshop CS5.
Then, I will have to unlock the background lock, so I can work on the background, it is very important to unlock the lock before editing because it restricts me from changing the background of the picture, therefore I unlock it everytime before I start editing with my picture.
I will rename this layer as Layer 0, so it is easier to identify, and avoid me from being confused while editing because editing a picture might have to open a lot of layers.
First, I will start with Magic Wand Tool, this tool is to select the part that you want to delete.
I started with this picture, I used the Magic Wand Tool to delete the background from the model. I simply select the part I don't want, and press command+D, and it will be gone.
This is how it became after deleting all the background, so I am able to add another background behind the model.
However, sometimes the Magic Wand Tool is not able to clear everything up, some small pieces of the background are too difficult to clear them away, so I will have to use the Eraser Tool to clear the small pieces, it is very useful as I can control its size of the eraser, so it is convenient to clear up pieces in any sizes.
For example, from this picture we can see that the small pieces surrounding of the model, which is actually very small, but if we do not clear them up properly, it will affect the next procedure of editing, which is dragging it to the other background, the small pieces will then follow the model to the background and affect how it looks at the end.
This is the Move Tool, this tool is commonly used in editing photos in Photoshop, because we always drag things up and down, left and right.
And in here, I will drag the model to the photo at the right-hand side, so they combine together. I just have to use the Move Tool to drag the model to the picture and press "enter" to apply the transformation to the picture.
This is how it looks after combining together. However, this is too normal and there is nothing special about this picture, therefore, I am going to add some more effects to it.
I will go to the small block at the lower part of the right-hand side, it is the layer block. I will select the layer of the model, which I renamed it as " Smelling the bomb", because it is easier to identify and reminds me of which layer I am working on. Then I would go to "Layers" > " Hard light".
And then I will change the capacity from 100% to 90%.
This is how the picture looks after all these settings, it looks much more dreamy and magical, as if she is dissolving into the water with the bath bomb.
In addition to make it more magical, I searched " Water vignette" from the internet, I then use the Move Tool to drag the vignette into the picture.
But the size of the vignette does not match the picture, so I go to "Edit" > "Transform" > "Scale", it allows me to change the size of the vigenette .
Now, I can easily manage the size of the vignette, I fix the vignette to fit the whole picture, and press "Enter" to apply the vignette. So it will have the special effect on the background of water wave, making the picture more related to the water and giving the audience the idea of this is a bath bomb.
This is the Eliptical Marquee Tool, this tool allows me to crop a eliptical shape from the picture.
I want to make the picture more dreamy and make the audiences focus on the model rather than the background, because I realised that the background color is too eye-catching. Therefore I crop the part of the model by the tool, and I got rid of it.
I then blur the surrounding by going to "Filter" > "Blur" > " Gaussian Blur". So the surrounding is all blurred but not the centre of the part that I have cropped out from the picture.
I could also control the blurriness of the picture by setting it up. The higher the pixels, the blurrier the background. So I set it to 3.5, so that it isn't too blurry that the audiences couldn't see the background, but also making the audiences to focus on the model but not the background.
Here is the Horizontal Type Tool, it allows me to type or add text to the picture.
An advertisement usually has words to guide the audiences of what this poster is about and what it is advertising for, sometimes words strengthen the sensation of the advert.
Therefore, I used the Horizontal Type Tool to add text to my advert. " Dissolve slowly into the universe with The Intergalaxic bomb", I have written this firstly because I want the word to be eye-catching for the audiences, which catches the attention, secondly is because I am advertising Lush's Intergalaxic bath bomb, so I am adding the name of the bath bomb into the text, thirdly is due to bath bombs dissolve slowly into the water, and I would like the audiences to feel the same.
In order to achieve the best looking of the text, here are my settings of the text.
The font, the size and the directions of the text.
Apart from the settings of the text, I double clicked the Layer log, and add some more effects to some of the layer . For the text layer, I add shadows to it so it is more easier to observe and does more effect. I have chosen "Inner glow".
This is how it looks at the end of the settings.
An advert must contain the logo of the brand, it is very important because it simply symbolize the brand by the logo. It gives direct information to the audiences what this advert is advertising for. I used the Magic Wand Tool to cut out and background and I used the Move Tool to drag the logo into the picture.
Same as the procedure above, I go to "Edit" > "Transform" > "Scale", it allows me to change the size of the logo, I didn't want it to be too big and I placed it at the lower right-hand sided corner, as it has a eye-catching black colour, it attracts the attention of the audiences, and a logo usually is small and placed at the corners.
Same as the text, I also add shadows to the logo, first is to make it more eye-catching for the audiences, second is to fit it into the picture better so it doesn't look weird that it is outstanding from the picture.
This is how the advert look at last, it is dreamy, magical and iconic, as I used the dissolving bath bomb as the background, the girl holding the product, the original font from Lush and the logo at the corner of the picture.
Lastly, I will need to save the picture so that the work is done and could be edit anytime when there is a problem, I saved it as "Dissolve" due to its text, and also easier for me to identify it.
For the second print advert, I am going to use this photo which I have taken for my project. I have chosen this photo because I like the face expression of the model, and how she holds the bath bomb as if she is enjoying the scent of it. I believe this photo could help me creating a dreamy effect.
Like the previous photo, I edit the background with the Magic Wand Tool. I delete the part I do not want to keep, so I could change the background color or photo.
I also use the Eraser Tool to remove small parts that have left behind after using the Magic Wand Tool, for example, the small bits near the hair. This is very important because I have to drag her into a new background, and to make sure it looks nice, I must to it carefully.
Other than editing the background, the model must look nice too, so I use the Healing Tool to remove pores from her skin, so she looks better.
In order to make the photo looks dreamy and related to the theme of my project, I have found a photo from the internet of a flower background. It is because in the middle of the Sex bomb, there is a rose in the middle. So to advertise for this bomb, I decided to use rose petals as the background, it also looks dreamy as the colors are light and pink.
Then, I use the Move Tool to drag the model to the background.
Then, I go to "Transform" > "Scale", this allows me to change the size of the model and to drag her to different position.
As we could see, we dragged her to the left hand side, and I expand her size in the picture, from showing the head to the shoulder to showing only the head and some of her shoulder , I have done this because it looks more dreamy and allows audiences to see her face expression clearly.
Then I go to the Layer logs, and select "Soft light", this effect allows the model looks if she is dissolving into the rose petals, it also changes some part of the color to make it more dreamy, which is what I intend to do.
This is how it looks after I apply the effect on the model.
I then go to the internet again to look for a close up of Sex bomb, as this is an advert to advertise the products of Lush, and Sex bomb is the bath bomb that the model is holding, so a close-up of the product should be shown on the advert.
Same with the other pictures, I used the Magic Wand Tool to edit the background of the bath bomb, then using the Move Tool to drag it to the model.
I then go to "Transform" > "Scale" to edit the size of the bath bomb so it is not too big to cover the model and not too small so nobody could see the product. I put it to the right-hand side of the advert so it has its own space for attention and meanwhile does not cover the model.
It looks a bit awkward as the bath bomb does not seem to match with the background, so in order to make it looks better, I go to the Layer log, select the layer of the bath bomb, and double click it. I could drop shadows and add effects to it now, I have selected "Inner glow" so it looks more natural and fits in better with the advert.
After adding the bath bomb in, I realized that it is a bit dull just to put the bath bomb into the advert. So, I searched for some rose photos to make it looks better. I chose roses because of the middle of the bath bomb is a rose, so they relate better and it is more reasonable.
Sometimes, Magic Wand Tool does not do everything, and sometimes they might delete parts that we would like to keep, it is hard to control if I only want the flower from the picture. So, I used Quick Selection Tool to help me, this tool allows me to choose the part of the picture that I would like to delete or keep, even dupliating it, and it is more easier to handle with smal details like the flower.
After selecting the part I want, I simply use the Move Tool to drag the rose to the picture.
Again I go to "Edit" > "Transform" > "Scale" to edit the size of the rose, I also move it to the left lower corner of the bath bomb, so it does not cover the rose in the middle of the bath bomb, but also making it looks nice.
However, the color of the rose is too sharp, and it might take away the attention of the product, so I changed the capacity of the rose from 100% to 71%, so it is lighter in colour but also a bit transparent, it makes the photo looks more dreamy but meanwhile does not take away attentions from the audiences.
I also realized that one rose is not enough for making the picture rich and nice, so I found another rose from the internet. This time I have chosen a white rose, this is because the rose above is too sharp in color, and there is too much red and pink elements in the picture. White could lighten the saturation of the color in the picture, and additionally making it looks fresh and pretty.
I do the same thing with the red rose to the white rose, and this is how it looks after I put them into the picture, it looks richer, not as dull as before, but also attract people's attention to look at the product.
Although white lightens the saturation of the picture, however the contrast is too high and it is still eye catching, therefore, I changed the capacity of the flower from 100% to 85%, I do not have to change it as much as the red rose, because it is lighter in color.
To make the roses look more natural and fit in the picture, I also dropped shadow and effects for them. I used Outer glow because I think it achieves the best outcome with this effect.
Like the first advert I did, I placed the LUSH logo on the underneath corner of the advert, so it symbolizes the brand, but also informing the audiences which company it is.
This is the setting of the text, the style of the font is LUSH, which is the original font from the brand, so it makes the advert looks more iconic. I also used 70pt for the size of the text so they are not too small but also big enough to attract the attention from the audiences.
I also changed the color of the text. Originally it is black, and I wanted to use white, however, I found out that gray is a good color that makes the poster looks even better.
This is how it looks with gray font, it looks nice however it is not as dreamy as I want it to be. So I go to the Layer log, and add extra effects to the font, I have chosen Luminosity for the font.
This is how it looks with the extra effect, it looks more dreamy as the color darkens and the surrounding of the font slightly shine, it is also very attractive so audiences also pay attention on what the text trying to show. I make it short so audiences can read it very quickly and do not get bored.
Last but not least, I go to "Filter" > "Blur" > " Gaussian Blur" to blur some parts of the rose petals, as it creates a dreamy effect but also tells the audiences that the background is made with rose petals by the shape of the background.
This is how the final advert looks like.
I have to save the work after editing it, I saved it as "Sexy.psd" due to the text and the name of the bath bomb, it allows me to identify which poster it is when I need it or search it from my document.
For my third editing, I have chosen 3 photos from my shot list to combine them into a poster. These photos are all shot by full shot so the head to the foot of the model could be seen.
I want to use a plain pink
First I go to the "File" > "New"
I named the background as "pink bg " which means pink background, and I changed the width to 1920 and the height to 1200, so that it comes out as a rectangular shape which is suitable for my poster.
They also provide me a colour palette to choose a colour for the background, there are many colours to choose which is very flexible for me, there are also lots of pink so that I could choose a suitable pink for my background.
This is the Paint bucket Tool, it allows me fill a space with the same colour , it helps me with filling the colour into the background.
Then I used the Magic wand tool to cut off the background, because I only what the model from the picture. After cutting off the background, I will use the Move Tool to drag the model to the pink background.
Then I could use the Eraser Tool to remove some of the uncut parts from the picture, so it is cleaner and people will not be able to see the bits from the previous picture.
Then I could use the Eraser Tool to remove some of the uncut parts from the picture, so it is cleaner and people will not be able to see the bits from the previous picture.
At the same time, I photoshopped this logo I found from the internet, I cut out the white part of the logo using the Magic wand tool, using this tool could help me easily cut out outlined objects such as the word in white.
After combining all the pictures and logo together, I want to add some text to the poster, so it looks more interesting, and gives more idea to the audiences of what LUSH advertises for.
I used the Text tool to do so, from the text tool I could control the size of the words, type of font and also type the words onto the picture. I typed "Our products are freshly handmade" & "100% vegan", which are two ideas of what LUSH's promoting, I can also change the colour of the text, now it is contradicting to the background colour to be clearer, and also its size is suitable to fill in the black spaces between the pictures, makes it looks richer.
However I don't think the words are very natural, and I would like to make more changes to it, to make it fits the poster better. So, I decided to Drop shadows to it. I just have to go "Layers", choose the layer I would like to add shadows on, and this box will appear, I chose "Drop Shadows", and it now looks more clear and obvious, which could attract the audiences's attention better.
This is how looks after shadows on, we could see an obvious difference before and after, the outline of the words are definitely deeper and makes it more dimensional.
After all the editing, this is how the final product looks like.
For my 4th picture, I would like to use these pictures to edit my poster.
First, I use the Crop Tool to crop the background picture, because I would not like to have some blurry bubbly parts from the picture to affect its look.
This is how it looks after cropping the picture.
Then I removed all the backgrounds from other 3 pictures.
Then I use the Eraser Tool to remove some bits that has not been removed in the previous tool. So, those black flaws do not affect the picture.
For example the bits from the hair of the model.
This is how it looks after removing the background totally.
Then, I used this "Spot Healing Tool", this tool is for healing spots and aches from the face of the model.
For example these tiny spots on the face.
Then I combine the photo into the background.
Then this is how it becomes, after putting them together. Then I do the same procedure to the other 2 images.
I then go to "Image" > "Adjustment" > "Colour Balance", this allows me to change the colour of the image. This is the setting for the colour balance.
This is how it becomes after changing the colours of the image.
To make it more effective, I changed the saturation of the images, to create contrasting and also layers, so audiences feel more sensations from the image.
For each of the picture, I changed the Colour Balance, so they have different colours , and I deliberately use very different colour , such as Blue, Red, Yellow, so it is more colorful and fun to look at.
Then I typed " Submerge into the pool of LUSH art" into the picture, because text dont only give people an idea of what the advertisement is about, it also interacts with the content of the poster. I make the size of the words really big, so thet are more visible.
I also dropped shadow to the words, so they are more outstanding, and attract more attentions from the audiences.
This is how it loosk after adding shadows to it.
This is the final product after editing.
For my last poster, I am going to edit with these 2 images. The last one will be slightly different as it is in a vertical form but not a horizontal form.
First, I remove the background of the image, because I have to change the background into something else.
After removing the background, there are still bits of the background that cannot be removed by the Magic Wand Tool. Therefore I have to use the Eraser Tool to remove the bits that has left.
As I need a clean white background, so I go to "File" > "New".
Here, I could create a new background, I put the width as 1200 and height as 1920, so it becomes vertical.
Then I started editing the image that I have found from the internet. I removed the white background from it.
Then I duplicate it to create a lot of layers, so it looks more colourful , and it can also makes the picture look less empty. I could also shift the paint behind or in front of the model to do more gradient to it.
This is how it looks like after shifting the paint and changing the size of it.
I then add text to it, I have created a lot of layer of text. The text was "Let Colours Spread All Over You", it relates to the theme of my project. Young, fresh and energetic, as LUSH creates colourful art in the water, so this is a good idea of message to spread to the audience.
These are the settings for the text, the font is LUSH, the size is 150, I have done this because I would like to use LUSH's font to make the poster more iconic, and to fit its style. Also, the font size has to be large, so that they are big and visible.
To make the fonts more obvious and visible, I add shadows to it.
Apart from adding shadows to the font , I also added them to the paints, they look more obvious and prettier after adding shadows to it.
At last, I added the LUSH icon at the lower left corner, so that people know what this poster is advertising for.
This is how the final poster looks like.
